‘Mbira, Spirit of the People’
A tribute to Chartwell Dutiro master mbira player who died September 2019
As a festival Afrika Eye loves to focus on the many art forms that film so often explores in its themes and subject matter and non more so than the links between film and music. Simon Bright’s 1992 film explores the rhythms, the traditions and the spiritual, political and social role of the music of the ‘mbira’ in Zimbabwe.
We will be presenting an online screening of his film on Monday the 16th November 8pm UTC to mark what would have been our annual festival and as a tribute to the master mbira player Chartwell Dutiro who died in 2019.
Following the screening there will be an ‘in conversation’ chaired by Simon Bright with two renowned women ‘mbira’ players, Anna Mudeka and Millicent Chapanda, who are living and working here in the UK. They will be reflecting on their lives as musicians here in UK and on the role of of women within the musical traditions of Zimbabwe
