About the Event
On an empty road in the middle of the night, Shula stumbles across the body of her uncle. As funeral proceedings begin around them, she and
her cousins bring to light the buried secrets of their middle-class Zambian family.
The uncovering of family trauma and the complexities of generational and cultural divides are at the core of writer-director Rungano Nyoni’s
latest film. Bemba tradition dictates a very dramatic and outward show of mourning, but Shula remains dry-eyed and resolutely emotionless.
In this long awaited follow up to Rungano’s first film ‘I Am Not a Witch’ she explores the toll family secrets take on their keepers and the complicated costs of speaking up. Her darkly comedic and often surrealist style of storytelling is perfectly matched by David Gallego’s cinematography, as we witness an experience, which will resonate across cultures.
