About the Event

Come Back Africa dir Lionel Rogosin, 95 mins, South Africa, 18+

Lionel Rogosin's 1959 masterpiece Come Back, Africa stands as one of cinema's bravest political statements. Traveling secretly to South Africa, he created this powerful quasi-documentary following Zacharia Mgabi's struggle to find work in apartheid-era Johannesburg. The film courageously exposes the systematic cruelty, exploitation, and racism endured by Black South Africans under apartheid. Shot secretly, to reveal "what people try to avoid seeing," this poignant classic delivers a devastating, realistic portrayal of institutionalised oppression and human resilience.
